Whooping cough is a respiratory disease with symptoms including coughing, fever, sore throat and excessive production of mucus.
Usually the vaccine given for whooping cough is administered during early childhood and the injection is part of the combined DTP vaccine.
This vaccine is available for pregnant mothers who wish their babies to avoid the distress and discomfort of the disease before they are able to be vaccinated themselves as part of standard NHS early childhood immunisation.
When?
For pregnant women aged 18 or above, administered after 16 weeks of pregnancy and up to 38 weeks prior to giving birth.
What?
The vaccine is given as an injection in the upper arm.
Side Effects?
Possible mild symptoms include headache and muscle pain plus soreness at the site of the injection.
